Be silent with God

My first car was a 1986 CJ7 Jeep. This Jeep went through a lot over the years, but it ran pretty decent. However, it did have a few problems. It did not have any heat or air conditioning so that made things interesting. One of the most annoying things was the radio. Every time I would drive over just the slightest bump in the road, my radio would lose power and go silent. The power cords were not properly wired so the friction of going over a bump would cause a shortage.

As a 16 year old, I loved having my windows rolled down listening to music. Every time my radio went silent because of one small bump, I would get upset because it was silent. The worst part was that the radio would only come back on when I would hit another bump and it would spark the power cords to reconnect. I would go days without any music because of this. I replaced the cords and radio, but on occasion I would have to ride in silence.

My soul, wait silently for God alone, for my expectation is from Him.

He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defense; I shall not be moved.

Psalm 62:5-6

Prayer Tip #10 - Be silent with God

My Jeep is no longer with me, but still to this day I am not a fan of riding around in silence. I want music, a podcast, or to talk to someone on the phone to fill the emptiness of silence.

We often do not like when it is silent because we are alone with our thoughts. Being in silence can lead us down a spiral of thoughts, and we have no understanding of how we got there. Most of the time, these thoughts are negative which can be scary and produce anxiety. But what if I told you that being in silence can be a good thing?

In silence, the oncoming avalanche of thoughts and anxiety can be silenced by focusing on the truth, affirmation, guidance, and clarity of Jesus. When we turn down all the other voices around us and focus on the One True voice of God, we can find hope, rest, and peace. Removing the clutter of the unnecessary noises around us, can give us a moment to hear from God clearly.

In the Psalm above, it mentions that my soul waits silently for God alone. Waiting and silence does not sound appetizing, but this Scripture is reminding us that it is necessary to be alone and quiet with God. In the silence, we remember that God is our Rock, He has given us salvation, and He is our Defense. Our quiet time is a moment of silence with God. We are more likely to hear from Him when we are not surrounded by noise.

Prayer Points - Pray over these requests:

  • Thank Him for the gift of silence.

  • Ask God to help you to be silent in His presence.

  • Ask God to be the loudest voice and noise around you.

Suggested Prayer - Pray these words in your heart or out loud:

Dear God,

Thank You for reminding me that silence is a time to hear from You. It is a time to listen to Your truth and be reminded of who You are. Help me to sit in silence more often. Help me to devote time to being quiet in Your presence. As I go through the days and weeks, help me to praise You outwardly and inwardly. Thank You for Psalm 62:5-6. I pray this Scripture over my life. Thank You for being my Rock and Defender. I love You, God.

In Jesus’ mighty Name I pray, amen!
