When life gets busy, we can become weary. We give our all to our work, families, serving, appointments, and anything else on our schedules. It is easy to become overwhelmed with the daily tasks of getting the kids ready for school, doctor appointments, and work meetings. It gets tiring to go all the time without a moment to stop and rest. We were created to have rest. Our bodies, souls, and minds need rest often.
The Sleep Foundation recommends that adults from the age of eighteen to sixty-four should have 7-9 hours of sleep a night. Having the proper time to sleep can have several health benefits. WebMD says having a sleep schedule can improve your memory and focus and will allow you to have steadier blood sugar levels. This article also states it is good for your immune system to get enough sleep. These are just a few ways that rest can benefit us. Physical rest is important, but God offers us rest in His presence.
"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest."
PRAYER TIP #24 – Pray for Rest in God’s Presence
Rest is found several times in the Bible. As we are all probably familiar with the verse from Genesis 2:2, “And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done”. God rested after his hard work of creating the universe.
There are two types of rest. One being physical rest like mentioned before and who does not want those benefits for their physical bodies? The other type of rest is spiritual rest. Spiritual rest is coming to the Lord and resting in His presence. This can be in meditation over Scripture, quiet time, or even when you are listening to worship music while driving.
You may not be resting physically, but you are resting your mind knowing that God gives you the strength to complete your purpose for His kingdom.
Mark 6:31 points us to the spiritual rest we need. Jesus says, “Come aside by yourself to a deserted place and rest a while.” Jesus invites us to come to Him to find the rest and peace we need. He will offer the rest we need to sustain us for the days to come. The next time you feel weary, call upon Jesus and ask Him for rest, whether by yourself or not, call on Him.
Prayer Points –
Pray for rest physically and spiritually.
Ask God to give you peace in the time of rest in His presence.
Pray and seek to have a quiet place with God to rest in His presence.
Pray that God will use this quiet time of rest to equip you for the purpose God has given you.
SUGGESTED PRAYER –
Lord, Thank You for being an example of rest for us to follow. I praise You for this opportunity to come to You with no burdens and sit in Your presence. Lord, please give me peace as I rest in You. Please restore me in this precious moment together. I give You my life to use me for the purpose You have written in my storybook. Thank You for calling me to You. Thank You for Your open arms. Thank You for being in control of my schedule. Lord, do not allow me to be a slave to my schedule and forgo our quiet time. Please help me to keep You first. I love You, Lord.
In Jesus’ mighty name I pray, Amen.
