Remain in childlike wonder of our great God

When I was younger, I was obsessed with the outer space. When I got my very first iPhone, the first app I downloaded was a night sky app that could show the names of stars, planets, and constellations when the camera was pointed at them. I loved learning about different constellations and the specific names of stars. I loved reading about the planets and the closest galaxies to ours. Specifically, I loved stargazing. I would lay out on my family’s trampoline and stare up into the heavens, totally in awe of the twinkling tapestries of the sky.

As the years have passed, I’ve lost some of the same wonder I had for the stars. The night sky is something I’ve been able to see nearly every night for many years now. It’s become something I take for granted, and I find myself not looking up as often as I used to. I pray that this isn’t something that will ever happen to my wonder of the Lord.

Over the years of listening to Bible stories and hearing about God every week in church, it can be easy to become numb to the wonder of our great God. We can become used to hearing about Him and begin to take Him for granted in our lives. But when we stop to really ponder over the character of God and what He’s done for us, it inspires an incredible sense of awe.

“Oh, give thanks to the Lord!

Call upon His name;

Make known His deeds among the peoples!

Sing to Him, sing psalms to Him;

Talk of all His wondrous works!

Glory in His holy name;

Let the hearts of those rejoice who seek the Lord!”

Psalm 105:1-3

Our God is a great God. He’s unlike any other. He’s holy, loving, merciful, righteous, and generous in ways that are different from every other being in heaven or on earth. He’s set apart and perfect in every way. He's powerful. He created the stars and the galaxies, the flowers and the earth, you and me, and every other person in the world. This incredible God rescued us from our sin, offers us a place in His great plan, and gives us a life forever with Him. He loves us, cares for us, and wants a relationship with us. It’s amazing!

In the verses above, it’s easy to see the wonder of God that the psalmist is dwelling in. This is the state that we should strive to be in—constantly in awe of our great God.
