Speak a gospel of truth and positivity

Women’s Prayer Team - Week 10

A few weeks ago, my husband and I went on a little getaway trip to Nashville as a late Christmas present and an early Valentine’s Day present. On this trip, we asked a lot of personal and deep questions about one another and about our marriage. We both said that something we want to get better at is doing our devotions together in the morning. We had made that a priority at the beginning of our marriage and we have failed many times.

So, while we were on this trip, we started doing our devotions together in the morning again. I am doing a yearly devotion called “New Morning Mercies” and it has a passage of Scripture with each devotion. The devotion for that day happened to be something I have been struggling with for a long time – “what gospel will you preach to yourself?” Then, I came across the passage of Scripture that went along with the devotion: Psalm 42.

I will say to God my Rock, “Why have You forgotten me?

Why do I go mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?”

As with a breaking of my bones, my enemies reproach me,

While they say to me all day long, “Where is your God?”

Why are you cast down, O my soul and why are you disquieted within me?

Hope in God; for I shall yet praise Him, the help of my countenance and my God.

Psalm 42:9-11

PRAYER TIP #10 – Pray to speak a gospel of positivity and truth in your life.

“Every day you preach to yourself some kind of gospel – either a false ‘I can’t do this’ gospel, or the true ‘I have all I need in Christ’ gospel.” When I read this in “New Morning Mercies,” I was just blown away with the truth of that. No one is more influential in your life than yourself, because no one talks to you more than you do. We always have an inner discussion with ourselves, whether that be about God, life, others, ourselves, etc. In Psalm 42, we see a man doing this very thing – preaching to himself.

You are preaching to yourself either a gospel that produces fear or one that propels you with courage and hope. You are preaching to yourself of a God who is distant and uncaring or of a God who is near and caring.

What have you been saying to you? What have you been saying to you about yourself? What have you been saying to you about God? What have you been saying to you about life, meaning, and purpose. What have you been saying to you about right and wrong, true and false, and good and bad?

I encourage you to read all of Psalm 42 about what this man was preaching to himself. I encourage you to preach a gospel to yourself of positivity and truth. Don’t be so downcast, “Hope in God; for I shall yet praise Him, the help of my countenance and my God.” (Psalm 42:11b)

Prayer Points:

  • Lord, thank You for Your goodness and truth found in Your Word.

  • Lord, help me to speak truth and positivity into my life.

  • Lord, help my soul to not be downcast, and to praise You for who You are.

  • Lord, help me to speak kindly about myself and my life.

  • Lord, help me to see the good and positivity even when I may not see it.

Suggested Prayer - Pray these words in your heart or out loud:

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for who You are! Thank You for the Bible and the goodness and truth that is found in it! Lord, I ask You to help me preach the gospel of truth and positivity in and over my life! Father, help my soul to not be so downcast and to praise You for who You are and what You have done! Even in the midst of trials and difficulty, Lord, help me to see that You are working! Thank You, Lord, for Your grace and mercy even when I am so undeserving of it! Lord, help me to live a life that is pleasing to You! Father, help me to speak words of truth and life over myself! I love You, Lord! In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Your Friend,

Brooke Hartley
