The Power of a Praying Mother

When I was a young teen and someone would ask me “what do you want to do one day?”, the first thing that I would think of as my reply would be “to be a mom.” The Lord took that desire of my heart and blessed my husband and I with our three boys - Asher, Micah, and Banner.
I always loved being around babies and little children as I grew up. As a young girl, I remember playing with a baby doll and pretending to feed the baby its bottle and wrapping it up in a blanket. I remember loving to babysit my cousins or family friends’ children when I was in my teen years. So, when I married my wonderful husband in 2017, I had a desire to begin our family early in our marriage.
When Asher was born six years ago, I remember feeling such a weight of responsibility in raising him that I never felt with my pretend baby dolls or the children I would babysit. Jordan and I now had the responsibility and privilege to love, train, nurture, and discipline this little child. I realized I needed serious help - help that could only come from the Lord. Being a mom is the hardest but best thing I’ve ever done. Because of this, I want to partner with the Lord in prayer as I raise my children in the training and admonition of the Lord. When we pray, we are humbling ourselves before God and saying “God, I need Your help and can’t do this without YOU!”
Ephesians 6:4
“And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord.”
Prayer Tip #35 - Partner with God by praying for your children.
Prayer is simply communicating with God. When I pray to God according to His will, He says that He hears me! (1 John 5:14-15) I love when my boys talk to me. When I pick up my oldest from school, I genuinely can’t wait to hear about every aspect of his day from what he played on the playground to what his friends ate for lunch. It brings me joy when my children talk to me or come to me when they need my help. Think about how much our heavenly Father loves to hear from us when we talk to Him or ask Him for wisdom and guidance in our lives.
I recently began reading a book called “The Power of a Praying Parent” by Stormie Omartian. I was blown away by all of the topics she suggests praying for your children that I just had never thought of before. Topics such as your children feeling loved and accepted, developing a hunger for the things of God, following the Truth and rejecting lies, and so many others. “Why leave your child’s life to chance when you can give it to God?”, Stormie states in her book. I don’t want to leave any part of my boys’ lives to chance! I know when I pray for them, that I am wielding a powerful weapon against the enemy.
Here are some ways you can partner with God and pray for yourself and your children -
⁃ Above all, your children trusting in Jesus for their salvation
⁃ Being a godly and loving mother
⁃ Spiritual growth
⁃ Godly friendships
⁃ Honoring God and resisting temptation
⁃ Health
⁃ Using their lives for God’s glory
⁃ Bond with other siblings and family
⁃ A sound mind not governed by fear or anxiety
⁃ Wisdom
Proverbs 22:6
“Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will
not depart from it.”
I am not a perfect Mom, and I know I never can be a perfect Mom. But even better, I can access the power and wisdom of God by covering myself and my children in prayer.
Prayer Points -
⁃ Ask God to strengthen your prayer life.
⁃ Don’t leave the lives of your children to chance.
⁃ Cover every aspect of being a mom and your children’s lives in prayer.
⁃ Pray with your children and show them what dependence on God looks like.
Prayer -
Dear God, I come before You now in the Name of Jesus. Thank You that You are the perfect parent and my Heavenly Father who loves me. Thank You that You want to have a relationship with me. I pray that You would strengthen my prayer life. I pray that I would talk to You about everything - I know that You care even about the “little things” of my life, but especially the lives of my children. Thank You for the gift that my children are. I pray You would give me wisdom from You in raising them to love You and honor You with their lives. Please make me a godly mother who loves and disciples her family.
In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.
Praying with you,
Kaitlyn Beaton
